"Each separate conscious being aspires to set himself up alone as a sovereign subject. Each tries to fulfill himself by reducing the other to slavery. It is possible to rise above this conflict if each individual freely recognizes the other, each regarding himself and the other simultaneously as object and as subject in a reciprocal manner.

What peculiarly signalizes the situation of woman is that she – a free and autonomous being like all human creatures- nevertheless finds herself living in a world where men compel her
to assume the status of the other.

How can a human being in a woman's situation attain fulfillment? What roads are open to her? Which are blocked? How can independence be recovered in
a state of dependency? What circumstances limit women's liberty and how can they be overcome?
